Frequently asked questions.

What are antenatal classes?

Antenatal classes help you prepare for labour, birth and early parenthood. They provide evidence-based information on what to expect during pregnancy & labour, pain relief methods, birth options, infant feeding & how to care for your newborn.

At Nurture by Natalie, our antenatal classes focus on informed decision making, practical birth preparation and postnatal recovery, ensuring you feel confident, supported and empowered throughout your journey.

What is the Hypnobirthing method?

Hypnobirthing is a birth preparation method that uses relaxation, breathing techniques and visualisation to reduce fear and manage pain. It is based on the Fear-Tension-Pain Cycle, where fear increases stress hormones, making labour more painful.

Hypnobirthing helps break this cycle by promoting relaxation, which boosts endorphins (natural pain relief) and oxytocin (the hormone which drives labour). Research suggests it may reduce the need for pain relief, shorten labour, and lower intervention rates, while improving overall birth satisfaction.

While it doesn’t guarantee a specific birth outcome, it empowers parents with tools to approach labour calmly and confidently.

Can I learn Hypnobirthing on my own?

Yes, you can learn hypnobirthing on your own using books, online courses, and guided audio tracks.

However, working with a trained educator like Nurture by Natalie offers personalised support, tailored techniques, and a deeper understanding of how to apply hypnobirthing in different birth scenarios.

A structured course also provides practical exercises, birth partner involvement, and a chance to ask questions, helping you feel more confident and prepared. Whether you choose self-study or a guided course, regular practice is key to making hypnobirthing techniques effective for your birth.

When should I start Hypnobirthing classes?

You can start hypnobirthing classes at any stage of pregnancy, but most people begin around 20-30 weeks to allow plenty of time to practice the techniques.

Starting earlier gives you more time to build confidence, but even if you begin later, hypnobirthing can still be beneficial. The key is regular practice, so the techniques feel natural and effective when labour begins.

Can I use Hypnobirthing if I am having a C-Section?

Yes! Hypnobirthing can be incredibly beneficial for a planned or unplanned C-section.

The relaxation techniques, breathing exercises and positive mindset help reduce anxiety, manage stress, and promote a calm birth experience.

Many parents use hypnobirthing to feel more in control, stay present during the procedure and support a smoother recovery.

It can also be incorporated into a gentle or family centred C-section, where the environment is made as calm and personal as possible.

What is a birth plan?

A birth plan is a document that outlines your preferences for labour, birth and immediate postpartum care. It helps communicate your wishes to your healthcare team, ensuring they understand your choices regarding pain relief, birthing positions, interventions, newborn care, and the overall birth environment.

While birth is unpredictable a flexible birth plan empowers you to make informed decisions and feel more in control. It’s not about guaranteeing a specific outcome but about ensuring that your voice is heard and respected throughout your birth experience.

When should I write my birth plan?

It’s a good idea to start thinking about your birth plan in the second trimester and aim to finalise it by around 34-36 weeks.

This gives you time to discuss your preferences with your midwife or doctor and make informed decisions. Birth plans should be flexible, as labour can be unpredictable, but having one ensures your wishes are understood and listened to.
